About

Welcome to Doulos Theou!

I am a ‘doulos theou,’ a term used throughout the New Testament for those belonging to the Lord Jesus Christ. The term is translated as ‘a slave or bond-servant of God.’ In the times of the New Testament, as much as one-third the Roman population lived as bond-servants, were the property of a Roman citizen and had no rights. While there were undoubtedly times and places where the harsh, negative connotation of ‘slave’ was justified, the word was also used of someone who voluntarily served others or to a person in a permanent role of service.

Most of Paul’s letters begin by referring to himself as a bond-servant of Jesus Christ. James, Jude, Timothy and Peter all refer to themselves as Christ’s bond-servants. This has none of the negative connotations of a force-laboring slave, but we as believers freely, cheerfully, willingly and lovingly submit to the role of a bond-servant of Christ, bought by His blood and redeemed to be with Him forever! We readily own and submit to our loving Lord and Master, being obedient to His will for our lives.

May He alone get any glory from these studies, and may He bless these lessons to those who read.
